Healthy Skin Through the Lense of Ayurveda
One of the things that stands out about Ayurveda is that it sees the body as one interconnected system, where everything influences everything else.
Our skin is the body's largest living organ, constantly communicating with both our inner physiology and the world around us. Rather than viewing the skin as something separate to be treated in isolation, Ayurveda understands that it reflects what is happening within the body. Digestion, hormones, circulation, sleep, stress, emotions and the balance of the nervous system all influence the health and appearance of our skin.
This holistic understanding reminds us that healthy, radiant skin isn't created by chasing the latest trend or miracle product. It is the natural expression of a body that is nourished, balanced and functioning well.
Today we're inundated with an endless stream of skincare advice. Miracle serums, active ingredients, acids, injectables and aesthetic treatments all promise younger-looking skin. Whilst these all have their place, they can also lead us to believe that ageing is something to fight or control.
Ayurveda offers a different perspective...
It teaches that ageing is a natural and sacred part of life, not a problem to be fixed. Rather than striving for perfection, Ayurveda encourages us to cultivate health, vitality and balance so that we age with grace.
Ironically, the constant pursuit of perfection often creates the very thing Ayurveda seeks to calm: tension. We tighten our jaw, analyse every new line and compare ourselves with filtered images and unrealistic ideals. This subtle state of striving keeps the nervous system activated.
In Ayurveda, the later stages of life are naturally governed by Vata dosha, whose qualities include dryness, lightness and movement. One of the foundations of Ayurvedic self-care is gently balancing Vata through nourishment, warmth, stillness and loving touch. As we soften our relationship with ourselves, that inner state is often reflected in our skin.
Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Skincare...
I have developed my new holistic facial by bringing together the knowledge and practices that have inspired me most throughout my Ayurvedic training. It draws on the traditional wisdom of Ayurvedic facial massage, marma point therapy and the beautiful Kansa wand, all of which I studied during my intensive 3-month training in Kerala.
Ayurveda recognises that each of us is born with a unique constitutional blueprint, known as our Prakriti. Throughout life, this is influenced by stress, hormones, digestion, lifestyle and the changing seasons, creating our current state of balance or imbalance, known as Vikriti.
.This means that no two facials are ever quite the same.
The current summer heatwave is a perfect example. Some people experience increased oiliness and congestion, whilst others notice dryness, dehydration, redness or sensitivity. Rather than using the same products for everyone, I tailor each treatment according to your constitution, or dosha, your current imbalances, your skin's needs on the day and the season.
Your treatment begins with a gentle double cleanse using the beautiful Fushi botanical skincare range. I chose Fushi because I believe in using organic, plant-based ingredients that truly nourish the skin. They are products I genuinely love and use on my own skin every day.
A nourishing natural face mask is then applied to replenish and restore the skin before moving into the massage.
To cool, tone and hydrate the skin, I use either organic Tulsi hydrosol or organic Bulgarian Rose hydrosol, selected according to your skin's needs. Tulsi is revered in Ayurveda for its balancing and revitalising qualities, whilst Bulgarian Rose beautifully cools, calms and hydrates the skin, making it especially supportive during the warmer months.
I carefully select a blend of therapeutic botanical oils according to your constitution, your current imbalances and the season.
Wild Carrot Seed Oil supports healthy skin renewal, brightens tired complexions and is especially beneficial for mature skin.
Rosehip Oil is naturally rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, helping to improve hydration, support collagen production and soften the appearance of fine lines.
Organic Sesame Oil, treasured in Ayurveda for thousands of years, deeply nourishes the tissues whilst helping to calm and ground the nervous system.
Vitamin E Oil provides antioxidant protection and supports the skin's natural repair processes.
Jojoba Oil closely resembles the skin's own natural sebum, making it beautifully balancing for both dry and oil-prone skin.
Throughout the treatment, I combine intuitive facial massage, Ayurvedic marma point therapy, sculpting techniques, gentle lymphatic drainage and the Kansa wand to release muscular tension, improve circulation, encourage healthy lymphatic flow and restore the skin's natural vitality.
As the treatment unfolds, the nervous system begins to settle, and the body shifts into its natural state of rest and repair. The face softens, tension melts away, and the skin begins to glow from a place of balance.
My intention is not simply to improve the appearance of your skin, but to create a space where you feel deeply cared for. When the body is nourished, relaxed and in balance, the skin naturally begins to reflect that harmony.
